Rock Prints

book review
This is one of the best climbing picture books I have ever seen. The expression that has been captured in these photos is unparalleled. All climbers will be able to identify with the struggle and passion that is portrayed in Greg Epperson's ONLY book. I have heard that this was a limited printing with only 2000 of these books left. Any climber that misses out on this opportunity will truly be unfortunate.

A classic of climbing photography
Greg Epperson goes to great lengths to take wonderful photographs of climbers in action, and this book skims a little of the finer cream of his work. Epperson is among the finest of adventure photographers, and his crisply understated monochrome images provide a welcome respite from the saturated overdramatic work of better-known photographers such as Galen Rowell. If only this book were available in a much larger format!

Rock Sport: Tools, Training, and Techniques for Climbers
Published in Paperback by Stackpole Books (August, 1989)
Author: John Forrest Gregory

Delightful reading, makes me want to get out on the rock.
I normally find "how to" books dull. Not this time. I feel like I've been climbing with someone form the old school. It's not often you can gain true experience from reading a book.

Fun to read book with great information!
This book will give you the basics of what you need to know to begin rock climbing, or to help you move on from top roping to lead climbing. But, unlike the other "how to" books out there on rock climbing, it is written in a breezy, entertaining style that will hold your interest like a good novel. You won't feel like you're reading a "how to" book at all. It even makes you laugh! I recommend it highly.

Rock Steady: A Story of Noah's Ark
Published in Library Binding by Harpercollins Juvenile Books (March, 1901)
Authors: Sting and Hugh Whyte
Average review score:

Manna From Heaven - For Your Inner Child
Sting's contemporary retelling of the biblical story of Noah's Ark is fantastic fun to read (or sing) to your children (or to your inner child).

The text is adapted from the lyrics of his song, Rock Steady, which is available on his ... Nothing Like the Sun CD. The artwork (by Hugh Whyte) is colorful and captivating. (Sting fans will especially enjoy the image of the young man wearing the black and yellow striped sweater - a treat for "Sting" fans who know how he got his nickname.)

Bible purists beware, however, as Sting has taken some poetic license with the biblical story. The plot follows a couple who respond to an add in the newspaper and join Noah to "commune with Mother Nature on a big wooden ship." While Noah informs that couple that he "heard God's message on the radio" and that there is more to the journey than is apparent to the eye, the story does not explain or allude to God's motivation or the biblical reason for the flood. (On the bright side, as your children get older, you can use this book as an example of Christianity's impact on contemporary culture.)

So buy the book - the proceeds go to a great cause - the Rainforest Foundation.

How could it be anything short of great?
Sting's lyric in this title is superb. I find many of his lyrics beyond Good/Average and believe he ought to be published in a literary sense. I am a poet/writer, but was first a musician as well. Cross venues are common with creative minds, but someone, please publish more of Sting! Lots of children's stories to be told, and much more adult imagery to express...

Rock, Roll and Remember

Dick Clark Looks back at "American Bandstand"
For many years. The fans of rock music and the tv rock and roll dance and music show that exemplified the music:"American bandstand"have wanted to know about it's creation and influence on the music scene. Finally Dick Clark tells all of his fans about the creation of TV's most famous dance and music series in his memiors:"Rock Roll & Remember!".Here Mr.Clark recalls how his parents took him to see a radio program being broadcast from NYC:"The Jimmy Durante/Gary Moore Show".Clark was so fancinated with the workings of radio. That he decided to make broadcasting his career. He started out in collage broadcasting. Before he went to work for a station in Utica,New York. But it wasn't long before he became aware of the growth of tv and he left radio for work at small tv stations in the northeast on a varety of shows. In l956.Clark joined WFIL radio in Philadelphia,Pa. and worked on the radio version of a popular dance and music tv show for teens:"American Bandstand!".The series .Which debuted on WFIL TV Ch.6 in Philly,Pa. 50 years ago was originally created to screen old jazz music films from the l930's and 40's.The station execs were not happy with the idea of someone simply hosting reruns of old jazz music films for 30 minutes to an hour.So it was decided to have some local jazz music groups perform on the show, have a studio audience of kids dance to the music.Have a host interview the kids and the guest performers rate the record that is being played on the show and plug the records.Contrare to public belief.Dick Clark was not the first host of "AB".The series first Mc was a local Philly DJ and record promoter named Bob Horn.Who Mc'd the show from l952 to l956.(reportedly with another DJ Lee Stewart).Horn was abruptly outsed from the show in l956 and Dick Clark took over the show for the next 30 years.Clark recalls the problems with trying to maintain a successful rapport with Horn's devouted fans and in trying to understand the music. He also talks about his dealing with the infamous Payola scandel that ruined many DJ's careers and sidelined Rock & Roll music for a time. But the music returned and Clark was able to prove that he didn't accept payola or any favors to play a record or get any performers on his show.Clark also recalls the staging and the successful performances of many of Rock music's most popular stars in "Dick Clark Caravan Of Stars"Rock concerts and his other endeavours in tv producing ,creation and hosting. He also gives some insight into his private life and his loving relationship with his wives and his three kids. For those persons.Who wanted an autobiography that doesnot border towards scathology and for those who want to know the history of Network TV's longest running and most famous Rock and Roll dance and music tv show? This is one book to have in your private library. Thanks For the music and the memories Dick and Hopefully..You'll be honoring "American Bandstand's 100th Anniversary"on January l8,20052! Kevin S.Butler at Stanbabe143@Aol.com.

Rockin and a Rollin
I was very happy with the book Rock, Roll, and Remember by Dick Clark. This has many qualities that made this book as good as it was. I am not that big of a fan of autobiographies but I found that this was much better then most of the autobiographies that I have read earlier. This book gives and in depth look at how Dick Clark got his start. It also give some in depth information on his down falls, describing the ''Payola'' scandle and the Congressional inveestigation. The only problem that I had with this book was that the years jumper around to much. On Chapter nine you will be reading about the late fifties while on chapeter ten you will be reading about the earliy fifties. This did not bother me that much and I am very glad and impressed with this book and I personally recommend this book to anyone one of any age. Rock and Roll lives on.

Rocks in His Head
Published in Hardcover by Greenwillow (08 May, 2001)
Authors: Carol Otis Hurst and James Stevenson
Average review score:

Don't Be Afraid to Follow Your Dream.....
"Some people collect stamps. Some people collect coins or dolls or bottle caps. When he was a boy, my father collected rocks. When he wasn't doing chores at home or learning at school, he'd walk along stone walls and around old quarries, looking for rocks. People said he had rocks in his pockets and rocks in his head. He didn't mind. It was usually true." So begins Carol Otis Hurst's inspiring biography of her father and his lifelong passion for rocks and minerals. In simple and gentle prose, we follow the story of his life, how he grew up and married, opened a successful filling station, lost his business during the depression, and finally while looking for odd jobs and work met Grace Johnson, the Director of the Science Museum. Ms Johnson was so impressed with his knowledge, dedication, and love of rocks that she to gave him a steady job as night janitor at the museum so that he could work around rocks, and that as they say, was just the beginning..... Ms Hurst's fascinating story is beautifully enhanced by James Stevenson's spare and touching pen and ink illustrations, done in quiet earth tones, that really capture the life and times of this very endearing man. With an afterword to complete her uplifting story on the jacket flap, Rocks In His Head is an engaging and nostalgic little treasure that's perfect for youngsters 5-9, and is told with great insight and affection. Never be afraid to follow your dream!

The Triumph of the Amateur
An amateur is someone who does something for the love of it and the main character of Carol Otis Hurst's wonderful, beautiful Rocks in his Head is the epitome of an amateur. In this well illustrated story, Ms. Hurst recounts the story of her father, a rockhound who was dissuaded from making a career of his first love. We follow him through his life from successful gas station owner to family man struggling to make ends meet during the Depression, all the while lovingly collecting, cataloguing, and caring for an ever expanding rock and mineral collection. The payoff comes when her dad gets a job at the local science museum after the director notices his interest in minerals and then views his personal collection. The father goes on to become the curator of the museum's mineral collection. James Stevenson's illustrations perfectly compliment this story of a triumphant amateur. Children's books with true stories like this one usually have a summary page after the end of the story to give details left out of the main book. Unfortunately, details like the father being sent to college by the director and his eventual rise to director of the museum are left for the dust jacket, a part of a children's book that is often lost. Other than this minor criticism, I think this is a 5-star book and wish there were many more like this.

Rocky road : the legendary life and times of Billy Rancher

Rocky Road/The legendary life and times of Billy Rancher
This book was a great read. I read it non-stop. It chronicles the birth-through pain and suffering-of a Light that shines for those who knew the man and that I hope will shine yet for those who did not. His music still needs a resurrection that I know will eventually happen. His song, co-written with his brother John Leonard Rancher, "Chemotherapy" should be played from the rooftops as much for its mighty hooks as for the all too common woeful paean to cancer/premature death that it is. I play it often and Mr. Reader's woven story provides the insight to know just what a rocky road Billy walked to evoke the high pitch of emotion and faith the song harpoons the heart with.

Billy's music, especially post-cancer-is some of the most heartfelt and soulful I have ever heard. I am blessed to have seen Billy perform many times-including his last performance when he could not stand and even movement was painful- and have tapes of many live performances, including the final live video of Billy's Christmas message to the world,"Make Love, Not War" that Mr. Reader chronicles so well.

This book will fill in many of the blanks for those who lived through Billy's time and will acquaint strangers with a mighty soul who, save for his music and Bill Reader's lovely book, may never have known him.

A Lengendary Book about a Legendary Musician
Rocky Road: The Legendary Life and Times of Billy Rancher is a well researched and written book. It was given to me by my uncle, Peter Jorgusen, the former drummer and friend of Billy Rancher. I instantly starting reading and couldn't put it down until I was finished. It is a book that I recommend every music lover read, even if they did not have the pleasure of ever knowing Billy or his music. He was a legend of his time and it is a true tragedy that he died at a time where he was the hottest act of the Northwest. Bill Reader, the author of this book, put together and excellent representation of Billy Ranchers life...he will live forever in this book. This is a 5 star, 2 thumbs up book!

A terrific introduction to the subject
Fred Ward is the author of the classic series on gems published in National Geographic magazine and this book displays similar quality. Meticulously researched, wonderfully photographed, it is a marvelous introduction to the subject.

Excellent!
Fred Ward has a clear and concise writing style. This book is comprehensive, despite it's slender size. It is stunningly illustrated, with fabulous photos of well-known, and ordinary, gemstones and objets d'art. A must for the fan of jewels and gemstones. I'm collecting all his books now.
